Levels of Video
1) YouTube, Google Video, etc that I watch once and forget.
2) YouTube, Google Video, etc that I watch once, send to a few people, and forget.
3) YouTube, Google Video, etc that I watch once, send to a few people, save to my hard drive, and forget.
4) TV shows that I TiVo
5) TV shows that I download (thanks for the freebies, iTunes!)
6) TV shows that I TiVo and, while I’m watching, decide that I want to save to watch again later, so pipe the video through EyeTV so I can take the commercials out.
7) Movies that I watch
8) Movies that I rent (Blockbuster)
9) Movies that I download? (we’ll see once the AppleTV update hits)
10) Movies that I buy
11) Movies that I buy and decide I’ll want to watch enough that I’ll put them on the AppleTV
12) Movies that I buy and decide I’ll want to watch enough that I’ll put them on the AppleTV and possibly the iPhone.
13) Movies that I buy for my son and put on the AppleTV so I don’t have to watch in horror as he tries to handle a DVD (he’s very careful, but he’s also 5).
#12 and #13 indicate a high level of “I like this” on my part. They also require me to operate on the gray side of copyright law. Sounds like fair usage to any non-MPAA person (or lawyer) that you’d meet on the street.
